Both Baldwin and Gresham are good friends for 35 years. Baldwin had named his son after Gresham’s name, John. While Baldwin led a simple and honest life, Gresham had craze for money and led a luxurious life.
When Gresham is caught in the case of theft, Baldwin prefers truth over friendship. Gresham offers a bribe of $1000 for telling a lie but Baldwin rejects. In terms of friendship, Gresham appears to exhibit true friendship as he would have thought that Baldwin would help him escape the trial. Even in the end, Gresham confessed his guilt after seeing the honesty of Baldwin.
