The speaker hears a voice among the “bleak twigs overhead” and sees that its a thrush. An aged thrush, “frail, gaunt, and small in blast-beruffled plumes.” The small thrush, in this dreary winter and desolate times, is singing a song, and not just any song but a “full-hearted song of joy illimited.” The speaker realizes that the thrush has put its heart and soul into the song. The song is about some blessed Hope which the thrush is aware of but not the speaker. The song preaches the fact that Hope can be found even in the most desolate times.
