The poem, “The Darkling Thrush”, written by Thomas Hardy acts as a poem of despair and hopelessness. The poet bemoans the loss of the dying century. He is unsure of what the future holds and this rejection of looking forward is reflected through nature in the poem. The poet says that the sky acts as a canopy for the dying century and that the simple act of conception and truth has slowed down remarkably. The poet is unaware of any Hope left in the world till he hears the song of an aged thrush.
