The theme of the novel is greed and its impact on the individuals. To depict the power and greed of money,Wilde has set up a play, where he explores the corrupt mentality of people through different characters in a family realistically.
“The hour of truth” in the play is highlighted and justified at the hour when the family members accepts the offer of bribe and brings out the reality of their morality and sincerity.
Mr Baldwin is considered as an honest man, but it was only then, that he realises that even a noble man can become a liar and his uprightness can be compromised leaving behind all his ethical principles.
