There are donations in the classroom because the school is in a slum which is a poor locality. It runs only on donations of the rich. Moreover, the rich show off their generosity by having their names on the walls of the schools. However the poet points out the fact that these donations are quite meagre. This is why, the students are still illiterate and backward.
