A legend is a long mythical and traditional story which is quite old and often historical. However most of the times, it is not true. This poem is called A Legend of the Northland because the story which the poet narrates is quite famous in Northland and has supernatural events which do not occur in real life. However the story has a moral. This is why people pass it from generation to generation in order to tell young ones the outcome of greed.
