The poem A Legend of the Northland is based on the theme of greed. In this poem, Saint Peter who is a religious man, gets extremely hungry because of wandering the whole day. He reaches a home in which a woman is making cakes.

Saint Peter asks the lady to give him one cake so that he make be able to fill his empty stomach. However the lady is greedy. She prepares a small cake for Saint but after cooking it she feels that it is too big and then again creates a cake which is more smaller in size and refuses to give that as well. She then makes a tiny piece which again looks too big to give away and finally refuses to give it to Saint Peter.

Saint Peter gets angry and curses her. She is transformed into a woodpecker and flies away. Now, as a bird she lives a very hard life. The whole day she keeps searching for food and shelter. Through this poem, the narrator tries to tell us that greed is curse for us. We should never be miser. Instead we should be generous and try to help the needy.
