The Gessler Brothers were German shoemakers who valued the quality of the shoes they made. Both brothers were exceptionally good at what they did, creating the best boots in London. Mr. Gessler, the younger of the two brothers, looked like as if made from leather, with his yellow crinkly face, and crinkly reddish hair and beard, and neat folds slanting down his cheeks to the corners of his mouth, and his guttural and one-toned voice. His elder brother was so very much like him, though watery, paler in every way. It was really difficult to differentiate the two brothers. The elder brother died as he was unable to get over the loss of losing one part of their shop. Post his death, it was Mr. Gessler who continued with the work, all by himself, till the very end. Those two brothers, though made the best boots in London and even had the best materials, never advertised and soon lost their customers to big firms. Mr. Gessler would use all the money to buy materials, ignoring hunger and eventually starved himself to death.

The main theme in the short story “Princess September” is Freedom. The parrots gifted by the king to their daughters are encaged and are taught to speak just two words “God save the King” and “Pretty Polly“. They lack creativity because the cage is their world.

On the other hand, the nightingale is a free bird which lives her life as she wishes. This makes her creative, and interesting to the Princess September as well as the King and the Queen though she is not as attractive as the parrots.

Other princesses, like their parrots, become dull with the time and hence have unattractive looks. But Princess September grows into an attractive girl because of the freedom which she enjoys like the nightingale. Thus freedom is a must for a person to live his life happily.

It also comments on the lives many people live and which is confined, imitative and defined by what others expect from them. In a way, they live a life under constant judgment.

They live to fit other people’s opinions even without realizing so. Easton for all his politeness lived a life based on impersonation and deceit and never fulfilled his true potential.
