The old lady was very greedy. She did not give any cake to Saint Peter and made smaller ones. However those small cakes also turned out to be too big to give away. Hence she refused to give anything to Saint Peter.
Saint Peter was so hungry that he was half fainted. This greedy act of old lady provoked him and he cursed her. I think he did the right thing because greedy people like old lady should learn how hard the life is.
