The sadness, referred to, in the poem is because of our worldly desires. We have given up the humanity, love and unity. For the sake of power of materialistic things, we have become greedy and selfish.
Some of us cut trees and destroy environment, others create pollution with their industries and factories, some others engage in war, some kill animals while some hurt themselves. In one way or the other, we are causing our own destruction.
