There are two messages in the poem. First, a just and placid king is the one who has little interference in the lives of common humans. In the poem, it appears that the king was exercising too much control on his subjects. This is why the people become too eager to see him being hanged.
The second message of this poem is that one should always use his wisdom and intelligence to survive. In the poem, the king dies because of his foolishness.
