The old man in the story was a victim of the war and had to sacrifice his animals in order to save his own life. He never participated in the cause of the war yet had to face the devastating effects of the war.

The old man lost everything in his life as an effect of the war although he himself never participated in it. Hemingway feels sorry for the old man and the people like him who were mentally broken by the Civil War. That is why Hemingway portrays the devastating effects of war through this story.
