The narrator of the story is a soldier in the Spanish Civil War. While carrying out his duties, he met the old man at the pontoon bridge. The narrator is a compassionate character as he seen empathizing with the old man, when the latter worries about his animals. The narrator consoles the old man saying that his animals will be all right and requests the old man to carry on crossing the bridge. The narrator worries about the old man as the enemy troops were attacking. He’s hopeful for a peaceful end to the war when he says that it’s the Easter Sunday. The narrator is a rational character yet gets swayed by emotion while talking to the old man.
