The central idea of the poem is the discrimination and racism that black people have to suffer. The poet’s persona wishes for a different and a better world where he did not have to suffer at the hands of prejudice and oppression. He wants a world where he can get good education, good opportunities to earn well, travel around the world without any fear and live his life to the fullest. In the end he leaves us with a simple wish, that no one has to suffer due to the color of their skin.
