1 Answer

    1. Metaphor – metaphor is used to make an indirect comparison between two things/ situations. In the poem, the poet uses the metaphor of “marriage” of men and their guns. Here the men do not literally marry their guns, but the bond that they both share is compared to the bond between a husband and a wife.
    2. Imagery– imagery is the use of words to create a picture in the minds of the reader. It can be a visual image, tactile, olfactory, gustatory or auditory. In this poem the poet uses imagery to create a visual image of the scenes. In lines like “ in darkness shouldering their packs” and “We stand quietly at the doorstep shivering” the image of the action happening is created.
    3. Alliteration – alliteration is the repetition of the same sound or consonant in a line. In this poem the consonant “M” is repeated in “ make marriages”.
    4. Personification – personification is the attribution of human-like qualities to non-human objects. In this poem, the guns have been personified and given the ability to marry the men.
