The phrase “take the lead in summer luxury” is used for the grasshopper’s singing. According to the poet, when the sun heats up during the summer, all the birds hide themselves and their chirping is heard no more.

At such a time, the grasshopper appears and takes the lead of keeping the nature alive. It keeps singing and hopping from one hedge to the other.

By ‘take the lead in summer luxury’, the poet means that the grasshopper shoulders the responsibility to continue the music of nature and that the grasshopper is enjoying itself in the sun to its fullest and he was never done with his delights in summer
The grasshopper is never complaining of the hot scorching sun but is enjoying to its fullest by shouldering the responsibility of continuing the music of nature while the other creatures are taking rest.
