On the other hand, after the death of her mother, the poet misses her laugh and becomes sorrowful. According to her, humans are short-lived and transient. We change quickly unlike the sea which is immortal.

    This transient and mortal nature of humans lead of separation and loss. Poet’s mother die and now she lives with the memories of her mother. She is unable to express her sorrow. Hence she remains silent in the end.

    1. Personification: When the poet gives human characteristics to animals, plants or other non-living things. In the poem, the poet the Grasshopper using the word “he”. One more example is “the frost has wrought a silence” Frost is symbolised as something living.
    2. Metaphor: It is the direct comparison of two or more things. In the poem, the poet compares earth’s poetry with the singing of grasshopper and also compares the singing of grasshopper with that of cricket.
    3. Oxymoron: It is a figure of speech in which two contradictory terms are combined. e.g. “pleasant weed”. Weed is an unnecessary thing. However the poet calls in pleasant because it is a part of nature.

    The poet says that the world is bound to destroy on day. However it will be destroyed by fire i.e. greed which makes a person do all the inhumane blunders. However, if the world would have to perish twice, then coldness i.e. hate would be responsible for its destruction.

    So, greed and hate are the greatest enemies of humanity and the poet suggests us to never adopt them.
