In the story, Mrs Mallard’s ailment symbolized her toxic and miserable married life. At the beginning it said she suffered from a heart trouble, yet when she heard her husband’s death, she remained quite calm and composed. When, alone in the room, she started planning her life free from her husband and marital expectations, she seemed quite at ease and overjoyed. Her heart gave her no trouble until the moment she saw her husband, still alive. Overcome with emotions and shock, she died from a heart attack. It showed how shocked she was to see her husband alive and that made her realize that she was trapped in the marriage once again.
