The poet, Carol Ann Duffy is sympathetic to the animals who are forced into enslavement. The dolphins are captured and taken away from their natural habitat and forced to live in a confined space. Instead of regaining their freedom, the dolphins are ordered to perform tricks for humans. The poet anthropomorphizes the dolphins so that we can share an empathy with them. The treatment meted out to animals by humans is downright cruel and the poet aims to spread the message that we should be protecting the animals instead of using them for our own greed.
