The realistic description of the wood is made by depicting it as yellow. It means probably the season was autumn or probably the majority of the trees were birches and alders which bear such leaves. Two roads are shown to be diverging inside the wood. They are described as being laid similarly with leaves fallen on them mostly untouched by any traveller.
