The conflict in the story, the old one of the bridge, portrayed by the author is between the man and his inner self. For the old man his family was his animals. However in order to save himself, he had to leave his animals behind in the war prone area as he was 72 years old and he couldn’t carry all his animals across the bridge. The man was forced to kill his own considered family just save himself. Because of the war he was forced to kill for his own benefit, despite not wanting to do so.
