  1. Macbeth uses a rich trove of symbols to not just describe emotions of the characters but define certain ideas. The symbolism of light and dark is used to highlight good and evil in light of the actions or inaction of the characters.

Blood is used differently to represent injury and killing but also impurity and guilt like in the case of Lady Macbeth. Lightning and thunder are used to represent the evil outcomes of evil deeds.

Sleep represents innocence and piety which is disturbed when people commit excesses like Macbeth murders his sleep by murdering King Duncan etc. Similarly, water symbolizes cleansing of evil actions and sins etc.

Dark spirits ,ghosts like Banquo’ etc. represent a lingering regret and remorse that haunts the characters throughout the tale.Creatures like witches, owl  etc represent darkness, misfortune and omens of tragedy.
