Salvatore couldn’t marry his fiancé because of his ailment. He suffered from some form of rheumatism which not only made him unfit for the services but also the fact that he would never again be quite well. However, the girl and his family had said that she could never marry a man who would never be strong enough to work like a man. They had already made up their minds and the girl’s father would never say yes to their marriage.
