The poet discusses the importance of physical appearance and beauty in the world. In the poem, young Anne desires to be loved for her inner beauty. However the poet tells her that young men love hair because of her golden hair. No one would love her, if she did not have beautiful hair.
Anne becomes sad. However the poet consoles her by saying that God is the only One who loves humans because of their inner beauty rather than the physical beauty.
The poet actually deals with theme of dark reality of the world. Here, the things or individuals are appreciated as well as judged based on their physical appearance. This is why there is racial discrimination on the basis of colour.
