What is the Central Idea of the Poem The New Colossus?

1 Answer

  1. Basically, the Statue of Liberty served as the inspiration for this poetry. In the poem, Lazarus calls the Statue of Liberty the Mother of Exiles and describes her as a mother who embraces everyone in need of a home. She keeps her torch in hand to illuminate everyone’s path as they search for shelter in a strange land. Lady Liberty will not reject anyone; she will accept the weary, the needy, and everyone else who desires freedom.
