Basically, the Statue of Liberty served as the inspiration for this poetry. In the poem, Lazarus calls the Statue of Liberty the Mother of Exiles and describes her as a mother who embraces everyone in need of a home. She keeps her torch in hand to illuminate everyone’s path as they search for shelter in a strange land. Lady Liberty will not reject anyone; she will accept the weary, the needy, and everyone else who desires freedom.
