The central idea of the poem For Anne Gregory is that humans on earth love the outer beauty of everything (here women). They appreciate what seems beautiful to their eyes. So, there is a partial way of beauty. e.g. a person with fair skin will be considered as beautiful though he may be bad in actions. On the other hand, a black person will always be considered as inferior though he may be good at heart.

In the poem, little Anne who is innocent and not well aware of idea of beauty in world. She desires to be loved for her soul which is beautiful. However the poet tells her that people on earth will love her because of her golden hair. Without them, no one is going to love her.

Hearing this, she becomes sad. In order to cheer her up, the poet says that only God loves a person for his/her inner beauty and thus she should believe in God.
