    1. Alliteration – Alliteration is repetition of the same letter or sound in a line. In the poem the poet repeats the /p/ sound in the lines “Perfection of Paper”, “printing plant” and “pads:/ Yellow paper.”
    2. Simile- simile is used when the poet directly compares one thing to another by using the words “as” or “like”. In this poem, the poet uses simile in the lines “and gather slits thinner than the crevices/ of the skin hidden.”
    3. Irony – irony is used when what the poet says is in contradiction to what they actually mean. In this poem, the poet uses irony when he is talking about how gloves were not used because the factory wanted “the perfection of paper”. Here perfection is an ironic word.
    4. Metaphor- metaphor is used when the poet makes an undercut comparison between two things without using the words “like” or “as”. In the, the poet uses metaphor in the lines “crevices/ of the skin”, “was glued with the sting of hidden cuts”, “open lawbook” and “legal pad” as a “pair of hands.” Here the poet uses an extended metaphor to talk about the pain of being a lower class worker.
    5. Enjambment – enjambment is when the line is continued onto the next line without any pause. In the poem, the poet uses enjambment to create a flow of idea and form an internal connection within the poem.
