Metaphor– A metaphor directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. Example- “smiles are petals”
Allusion– It is an indirect reference of a person, place, thing or idea of a historical, cultural, political or literary significance. Here, the garden in the poet’s heart is an allusion to the Garden of Eden in the Bible.
Symbolism– Symbolism is using symbols to signify ideas and qualities. Here, the “beauty grows/ in fits and starts” symbolises the poet’s thoughts and feelings.
