    1. Imagery- imagery is the use of words to create a picture in the minds of the reader. It can be a visual image, tactile, olfactory, gustatory or auditory. In this poem the poet uses multiple images. He uses visual imagery in the lines “among the fat, overripe, icy, black blackberries”. He uses tactile imagery in the lines “the stalks are very prickly” and gustatory imagery in the line “which I squeeze, squinched open, and splurge well”
    2. Simile- simile is used when the poet makes a direct comparison between two things by using the word “like” and “as”. In the poem the poet directly compares the blackberries to words in the line “like strength or squinched”.
    3. Repetition– repetition is used when a word or phrase is repeated in the liens or stanzas. In the poem, the word “black” is repeated three times and the term “late September” is repeated twice.
    4. Alliteration- alliteration is used when a letter or sound is repeated in a line in the poem. In this poem, the sound /s/ is repeated in the line “which I squeeze, squinch open, and splurge well/ in the silent, startled”.
