Trees not just give us apples or pears. They have ample of uses. We use their wood, leaves, seeds, roots etc in our daily life. They also give shelter to birds, prevent soil erosion etc. Thus the line is not humorous because we depend on trees in all the aspects of our lives.
Its a humorous exaggeration.
