      Indirect Speech: The teacher told the boy that that was not the first time he had received his friend.

      Explanation: When the reporting verb is in the past (said) and the direct speech is in the present indefinite tense (simple present tense), then the indirect (reported) speech will change into the past indefinite tense.

      Present Indefinite Tense (is) > Past Indefinite Tense (was).

      And when the reporting verb is in the past (said) and the direct speech is in the present perfect tense, then the indirect (reported) speech will change into the past perfect tense.

      Present Perfect Tense (have received) > Past Perfect Tense (had received).
