An elegy is a type of poetry which is written in the memory of dead. It has serious tone. Gift of India is an elegy as it is written in the memory of Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the sake of their country. We find that India is personified as a mother who can feel pain and weep as well.
Mother earth weeps on the loss of brave sons of hers. She cannot bear their separation as they are buried on foreign lands. In the end, the poet desires that war may end and peace may prevail.
