Indirect Speech: She told me that she wanted the book she had given me the previous day.
Explanation: When the reporting verb is in the past (said) and the direct speech is in the present indefinite tense (simple present tense), then the indirect (reported) speech will change into the past indefinite tense.
Present Indefinite Tense (want) > Past Indefinite Tense (wanted)
And when the reporting verb is in the past (said) and the direct speech is in the past indefinite tense, then the indirect (reported) speech will change into the past perfect tense
Past Indefinite Tense (gave) > Past Perfect Tense (had given).
