- Imagery– imagery is the use of words to create a picture in the minds of the reader. It can be a visual image, tactile, olfactory, gustatory or auditory. In lines like “ in darkness shouldering their packs” and “We stand quietly at the doorstep shivering” the image of the action happening is created.

While the women are feminine, docile and domesticated. The poem also shows how these roles are forced on at a young age. As soon as someone is born, they are expected to behave in a certain way. Young boys take on the role of their father and the girls become like the countless women in the society.
