    2) Simile:- is the used to compare between two objects using the word “as” or “like”. For example, “….Warrior with scythe-like mustachioed.”

    3) Imagery:- is used to create an explicit description. For example, while describing the American, the author says, “Red face foreigner.”

    4) Irony:- is used to provide contrasting concepts viewed side by side. In the story, the irony lies in the fact that all the while Muni was trying to sell the goats, he ended up selling the statue of the horse.

The character of the American represented the materialistic attributes in human. His only concern to visit the village was to buy the horse statue as a decorative item. His initial plan was to do visit India and understand the lives of the people living there but he ended up buying the statue which was of great value to the villagers.

    Muni is, “very poor and very old farmer”, the protagonist of the story. He is established in the story with his wife and his goats. He was once a prosperous man but then after a series of misfortune, he had hit rock bottom. He belongs to the fictional village of Kritam. He traveled to the horse statue and sat on the pedestal, to graze his goats and reminisces on the past. One day, he meets with the American businessman and engages in a conversation which leads to a misunderstanding. He believes that the American was trying to buy his goats whereas the American main intention was to buy the statue. Muni saw the world through an emotional lens and hence, knows the value of his culture and tradition. His love for his village can be seen through the story he tells about the horse statue and his significance to the villagers. Despite being poor, he is not materialistic like the American but lives on limitless time and memories.

    RK Narayan’s story, A Horse and Two Goats, portrays a comic misunderstanding between Muni, a very poor farmer and an American businessman situated in a fictional south Indian village called Kritam. Muni is very poor with only two scraggy goats, even though he was once quite well-off. He believes that the American was trying to buy his goats when the American was actually buying the horse statue. Through this funny misunderstanding, we get to know about Muni’s cultural beliefs, especially about the villagers regarding the horse statue. The villagers believe that the redeemer will come back to save them when the world ends in the form of a horse, and hence, puts a lot of faith on the infamous horse statue. Though at the end both men ends up getting what they wanted, the contrast between the two men has been shown by viewing them as materialistic and spiritualist.

    The main humor in the story can be viewed through the exchange between Muni and the American as neither of them share a common language to converse. The American, speaking English, expects Muni to do so. However, Muni hailing from a different country is unable to understand the foreigner. The language barrier causes the humor in the story. Muni only knew the words “yes” and “no”. So when the stranger greeted him by saying, “Namaste! How do you do?”, Muni, scared, uttered, “yes, no.” After offering Muni a cigarette, the man offered him a light but Muni blew it on and put it out, as he was not understanding the man’s intention. Neither of the two could understand each other, so they tried to express themselves through sign languages or pointing at physical objects and through this process the conversation becomes more humorous and enjoyable.

    The moral of the story lies in the fact that even though there is a culture clash in the world, proper expression of one’s own culture and tradition will bring people closer to one another, even if they are from different parts of the world. Neither the American nor Muni could understand each other’s language but when Muni talked about the horse statue, the American’s attention was won over and he ended up buying the statue, even if it was for his own materialistic gain.
