A sting in the tail happens when any story ends on some unexpected surprise. This is clearly seen in this short story. Throughout the story, Fritz has been mentioned as a doll which Jayanto had received in his childhood. His obsession with the doll kept on growing till an unfortunate incident forced them to part. Years later, Jayanto and the narrator visits Bundi, where Jayanto had grown up and he is haunted by the fear that Fritz has come back. To ease him up, the narrator suggests digging up the place where Jayanto had buried the remains of the doll. Instead of finding anything like the buckle of a belt or brass buttons on a jacket, they found a twelve-inch-long, perfectly white, human skeleton. It’s quite an unexpected ending for the readers who weren’t anticipating it.
