Indirect Speech: He said that I was a student.
Explanation: When the reporting verb is in the past (said) and the direct speech is in the present indefinite tense (simple present tense), then the indirect (reported) speech will change into the past indefinite tense.
Present Indefinite Tense > Past Indefinite Tense.

Indirect Speech: He said that I was a student.
He told me that I was a student.
Why?
Because if the object of the Reporting Verb is not given then the Second Person’s Pronoun (You) of the Reported Speech will change into First Person.
As well as the object if not given then after Reporting Verb we use Second or Third person( Pronouns) to make the object. Rest the rules follows.
