In the poem How to Tell Wild Animals, “beasts of prey” is means animals which hunt other animals for their food. e.g. tiger, lion, leopard, crocodile etc. According to the poet, an unexperienced person can get confused between a hyena and a crocodile.
Both are different because one of them is herbivores animal (hyena) while the other is carnivorous (crocodile) i.e. beast of prey.
