Macbeth and Banquo are both brothers in arms as they lead their respective armies to victory for Scotland. They both respect each others abilities and stature up until they are told differing prophecies by the three witches.
Macbeth is predicted to be the new king of Scotland while Banquo would never get the same honor. However, Banquo’s will have lasting success with successful kings in his bloodline and Macbeth will find a dismal end to his kingship.
Following the predictions, both Macbeth and Banquo remain skeptical of its accuracy. However, goaded by Lady Macbeth, Macbeth is forced to murder Banquo and go after his son Fleance, who manages to escape. Thus, their friendship turns into a murderous rivalry to assume the rule of Scotland.
Both men are valiant and brave fighters but Macbeth is at a grave disadvantage in having a psychopathic wife who will stop at nothing to get her way , so his moral nature is swamped and he falls completely from grace. None of us know just how much temptation we can bear without breakdown.
