Power is the over riding desire for people in the society where Othello exist.Wars for possession of fertile lands of the Mediterranean forms the background of the story. Even individual characters like Iago, Rodrigo, Othello etc are vying for their share and form of power.
Iago wants revenge over Othello for preferring Cassio and exhibits powers of manipulation, Rodrigo wants Desdemona and Othello wants acceptance in a society and polity where he is still considered inferior due to his skin colour.
