The poor had hatred for the rich. He lived in a constant fear of the rich man taking away all that he had, hence, he refused to give his log of wood. On the other hand, the rich man believed that all the wealth in the world should belong to the rich and looked down upon the poor man by not giving his log of wood to the dying fire.
