A clause is a group of words that has some grammatical relationship to one another and is used to express a grammatical concept, such as subject, object, complement or predicate. A phrase, on the other hand, is a group of words that has some meaning but does not necessarily have any grammatical relationship to one another. An example of a clause: I like cats. An example of a phrase: I like cats.
