What is the central idea of the poem The Prologue?

1 Answer

  1. The Prologue, a poem by Anne Bradstreet, is an intriguing comparison of the poet’s own writing skills to those of men. The poet exposes the reader to a number of various justifications for why and how, as a woman, her poetry is inferior to that of men. She thinks she has a lesser intellect since that’s what women were taught to believe in her day. She is prevented from attempting to write on historical subjects or anything else of global significance by this. The poem makes a few points about women’s writing abilities, but she continually returns to appeasing the males who would object to her choosing to write rather than sew.
