The old man was never a part of the war yet he had to leave his animals, whom he considered his family, behind in order to save his life. The old man was a victim of the war and through him, the author tried to portray the condition of the refugees during that time. Survivors of the war had to leave behind their native land, their family and everything and run to save their own lives just like the old man had to leave behind his animals.

The setting of the story is a bridge in wartime Spain with an elderly stranger. The story starts with a description of the 72 year old man sitting at a bridge. The narrator of the story, who is the news reporter, was in charge to check the advancement of the enemy on a pontoon bridge. He saw the old man there, looking tired to walk any further and asked him about his life. The old man said that he was from San Carlos and that he had his pets as his family, which consisted of two goats, a cat and eight pigeons. The old man was evidently worried about his animals as he had to leave them behind in order to flee. He told the reporter that he was not worried about the cat as they would look after themselves but what would happen to the pigeons and the goats. He told the reporter that he was not worried about the cat as it would look after itself but what would happen to the pigeons amd the goats. The narrator consoled him by saying that the pigeons will be able to take care of themselves by flying away. However the future of the goats were not known. The narrator requested the man to get up and try to walk but the old man could not answer amd so sat down in the dust. The narrator then mentioned it was Easter Sunday and a cloudy day indeed.
