The little girl is poor which can be understood through her pitiable condition. She in selling matchsticks on a cold winter New Year’s Eve, in order to earn money. She is so hungry that she visions a roasted goose and so cold that she has a vision of a warm stove. She is barefooted, having lost her slippers and her the cracks of her roof is filled with straws and rugs which doesn’t even keep out the cold properly.
