  1. Walter Pater ( 1839-1894) was a critic, poet and writer. Pater was a great admirer of Renaissance art and literature and spent most of his life studying and writing about it. He wrote two books- Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873) and Marius the Epicurean (1885). He also wrote a famous essay on Leonardo da Vinci- “The School of Giorgione”. Walter Pater’s critical studies deal with the medieval period of English literature. He was concerned to restore the reputation of John Milton and to show that he was a great poet. He also wrote an essay on the English poets of the 16th century.
