Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov: He is the protagonist of the story. He has been described as a wealthy, cheerful and a frisky man in the beginning. However his mirth vanishes at the ending of the story, after being falsely imprisoned out of wrong allegations.
Aksionov’s wife:Though she has appeared only twice in the story, she has been considered as one of the most important part of the play for she was the one who had alarmed Aksionov of the misfortune through her nightmare and the entire story revolves as a proof of her dream. If Aksionov would have listened to her alarming words, then he would have not suffered for his life.
Makar Semyonich: He is the antagonist of the story. He was the actual murderer of the merchant for which Aksionov was accused. And he was the only one who admitted that he is the true culprit at the culmination of the story.
