The original title of the poem was “The Century’s End, 1900.” It was later changed to “The Darkling Thrush” as it seemed to hold more significance in relation to the poem. “Darkling” means darkness or growing dark which is quite close to the colour of a thrush. It also symbolized the thrush bringing forth hope, through his song, amidst all the darkness.
