In the poem, the speaker is a young child who is often beaten for making mistakes, for not eating green vegetables and for making his dress dirty (and many other things). Hence, he wonders whether the teacher led a different life than his own because he thinks that the teacher would never had done anything like him. This is why the child decides to follow the teacher back to home to see how he lives.
