The theme of the poem Palanquin Bearers is reflection of Customs and Traditions of Indian Marriage. In the poem, palanquin bearers are carrying beautiful bride in the palanquin and taking her to new home. They are singing and praising the bride. For them, she is not an ordinary human but a beautiful flower and a precious gem. She is light, lovely and source of happiness.
There are sentiments of sorrow as well as of joy. The bride is sorrowful because she is leaving the house of her parents forever. On the other hand there is joy because she is entering a new phase of her life.
